ESR5 - PhD journey with MGH

Embarking on a journey towards a PhD is akin to setting sail on uncharted waters. It’s a journey that demands hard work, perseverance, and a deep desire for learning new things. There is a personal story of growth, challenge and self-discovery behind the accolades and scientific achievements.

For many, the decision to pursue a PhD comes from a deep curiosity—a strong desire to dive deeper into a subject, understand it better, and make a meaningful contribution to scientific progress. This initial phase is full of excitement as you read extensively, develop research questions, and lay the foundation for what’s to come.

My own journey began with a leap of faith when I moved to Rostock for my PhD, a city where the language and culture were entirely unfamiliar. With determination and a thirst for knowledge, I started this adventure, ready to explore the unknown world of scientific research as an early-stage researcher (ESR) in the MonoGutHealth project.

As I progressed, I was faced with the tough challenges that come with a Ph.D. project. From understanding complex research methods to dealing with setbacks and rejections, each obstacle was a chance to grow. During these tough times, I found comfort in the supportive community around me—friends and mentors who guided and encouraged me.

During my PhD journey with the MonoGutHealth project, I had the opportunity to broaden my horizons through internships in different industries. My four-month secondment at Corbiota, Kaesler, and Agroscope offered valuable insights into how academic research applies in the real world. These experiences not only expanded my skill set but also deepened my understanding of practical applications of scientific research.

However, the journey was also marked by self-doubt. The constant quest for perfection, coupled with the fear of inadequacy, threatened to derail my progress at times. It was during these moments that I leaned on the support of those around me, drawing strength from their unwavering belief in my abilities.

And yet, despite the challenges and doubts that accompanied the PhD journey, there were moments of great success. Whether it was the exhilaration of presenting groundbreaking research at a conference or the satisfaction of seeing my work published, these milestones served as beacons of hope—a testament to the unwavering dedication and perseverance that defined my PhD experience.

As my PhD journey came to an end, I took a moment to reflect on the path I had traveled and the lessons I had learned. It was a humbling reminder of the power of perseverance and resilience—a testament to the curious spirit that drove me forward. Though the journey was not always easy, the rewards were immense, revealing the limitless potential of the human mind.

My PhD experience was not just about academic achievement but also about personal growth and self-discovery. It was a journey marked by peaks and valleys, triumphs and challenges, yet through it all, I emerged stronger and more resilient than I ever imagined. As I look toward the horizon of new beginnings, I carry with me the lessons learned and the memories forged —a testament to the transformative power of the PhD experience.
